When you think of dental fillings, does a metallic picture come to mind? That’s because amalgam fillings were used extensively for cavity treatment in the past. Today, dentists recommend natural-looking composite fillings to treat decay. Composite fillings combine strength and durability with a natural tooth-colored appearance that blends in seamlessly with your smile. At Westmoreland Family Dentistry, we offer composite fillings to our Augusta, Georgia, patients.
Here, Dr. W. Palmer Westmoreland answers your questions about composite tooth-colored fillings:
Composite fillings are natural-looking dental restorations used to treat cavities. They’re a mixture of resin and powdered quartz or glass, with no mercury or metal fillers, which is why they’re also known as mercury-free fillings.
Most people are attracted to composite fillings due to their natural-looking appearance. If you need several fillings, the last thing you want is flashing metal every time you smile! But aesthetics is only one of the many positive aspects of composite fillings.
White fillings are strong, long-lasting, and biocompatible with your mouth, posing no risk to your health. They bond directly with your teeth, forming a tight seal against future decay. They also strengthen and insulate your teeth, making them more resistant to chipping, cracking, and sensitivity.
A composite filling can last 5 – 10 years, with good oral care. Hard food should be avoided as they can crack or wear down your filling prematurely. If you grind your teeth at night, consider wearing a night guard to protect your fillings and teeth.
After removing the decay and cleaning your tooth, Dr. Westmoreland will apply the resin mixture in layers to your tooth, covering the area where the cavity was removed. We’ll cure each layer with a special light to harden it in place. Afterward, we’ll shape the filling for a natural appearance, check your bite to ensure it feels right to you, and polish your tooth to prevent premature wear.
Costs vary depending on the size of your filling, its location, and the need for x-rays, and the use of anesthesia. However, this treatment is generally covered under dental insurance. We also offer flexible payment options to our patients to facilitate this treatment and other essential procedures.
Not at all! Dr. Westmoreland will numb your mouth to keep you as comfortable as possible for this treatment.
You treat fillings as part of your tooth. Daily brushing and flossing will keep your filling and tooth strong and healthy long-term. We’ll inspect your restorations regularly during biannual exams to ensure they’re working as they should.
